Job Title:

Friendship Center Volunteer.

Job Description:

Under consultation and supervision, volunteers will be responsible for organizing group activities to benefit adults with mental illnesses in the Mental Health Association's Friendship Center Program.  Activities may include educational classes, table games, special events, arts and crafts, group fitness, sports, picnics, and day trips to Bay Area points of interest.

Qualifications:

Out-going personality, initiative, a sense of humor, flexibility, good listening, and communication skills, creativity, empathy for individuals with mental illnesses, ability to work with small and large groups, and good time management.

Volunteers will gain knowledge of social rehabilitation and recreation principles, explore career options in the mental health field, learn about social services and community resources, and develop skills that will be beneficial for careers in psychology, sociology, social work, public health, and nonprofit administration.

Location:

Friendship Center meetings are held in church halls and community rooms located near public transportation.  Program sites are located near public transportation.  Program sites are located in Daly City, San Mateo, Belmont, San Carlos, Redwood City, and East Palo Alto.

Training:

New volunteers will participate in an agency orientation session.  On-going training is provided and includes site visits, guest speakers, workshops, viewing and discussing videos, and attending community conferences.  Upon placement at a program site, volunteers will work closely with experienced volunteers and staff.

Days and Hours Needed:

Monday 9:30am to 1:00 pm or 12:00noon to 3:00pm
Tuesday 10:00am to 1:00pm
Wednesday 9:00am to 1:00pm
Thursday 10:00am to 1:00pm
Friday 9:00am to 1:00pm

Time Committment:

2-4 hours per week minimum for aminimum of 3 months.
